Until a few years ago, having an elevator at home was something beyond the reach of most of the population. The cost of the elevator and its maintenance costs, only allowed them to be installed in a very timely manner, as for example, in cases of people with reduced mobility or with a high purchasing power. Today, on the other hand, having a private lift means a much more profitable investment, requiring fewer requirements. In part thanks to the birth of the domestic lift, an adapted solution to the installations in single-family homes, low-rise buildings or commercial premises. Thanks to this type of solution, the acquisition of elevators in houses of more than one plant has increased considerably.
Differences between domestic elevator and a traditional elevator
When talking about the domestic elevator, however, the first thing to keep in mind is to know the differences with a conventional elevator. Although commonly believed to be the same, each one presents its particularities.
The main difference between these two solutions is the speed they offer. While the traditional lift is faster, moving at a speed of 0.6m / s, the domestic elevator is slower, about three times more, since it can only move at 0.15m / s at most. The second difference is that of the installation. Although the classic elevator, due to its speed, can be installed in all types of buildings, its domestic version, due to its slowness, only fits into buildings with a few floors.
The domestic elevator, against the traditional elevator, also has a lower power consumption, an easier and simpler installation and, in addition, a minimum maintenance cost. Not needing a box of machines, saves many problems and above all occupy much less space in the house in which it is to be installed.
Along with these two systems, the forklift, is another possible option. It is a lifting mechanism formed by a platform that slides through two cables, roughly, since they are normally manufactured and used to transport heavy loads vertically (although they can also be used to transport people). Forklifts, however, are the best alternative if you want to save a slope in the house. Thus, they are widely used for people with reduced mobility, since they have a higher measurement than a normal lift.
Advantages of the domestic lift
What factors make it easy and affordable today to have a domestic lift or elevator? These lifting systems have a series of features compared to conventional lifts that facilitate their installation in private homes.
The price of installing a domestic lift is much lower than that of a conventional lift, not only for the materials and the installation, but also because the civil work requirements and the future maintenance and preservation cost much less.
Less space, more cabin dimension
Since they are usually made to measure and the mechanisms used in the domestic elevator shaft are smaller, they allow for better use of the available space. In addition, the domestic lift can be installed without a pit with a ramp or a small pit, while the elevators need it to be larger. A depth of 0.10 or 0.25 meters deep is sufficient for the elevator; while the traditional lift requires a minimum of 1.20 m to be installed.
Less installation requirements
You also have to have the need for a pre-set height. From the floor to the roof of the last floor, the elevator only needs a margin of 2.30 meters. The elevator, however, requires about 3.60 meters in height. Thus, sometimes owners who opt for the classic elevator system are forced to open part of the roof and roof of the house to meet this requirement.
Lower energy consumption
The elevator of a house consumes between 2.2 kW and 2.7 kW, below conventional elevators. Therefore, it is not necessary to contract another three-phase line, being able to work with the same voltage contracted for the rest of the house.
Maintenance and minimum conservation
While in most conventional elevators the maintenance is carried out with a monthly periodicity, in the domestic elevators it is carried out every four months, what supposes a considerable saving, to which it is necessary to add other important factors as. On the other hand, in the case of the domestic elevator it is not necessary to have to contract an exclusive telephone line
In most of the blocks of flats there is an elevator that facilitates the accessibility to the houses. In the houses this is not usually not so usual, but if there is any case of a person with reduced mobility, we must find solutions. The installation of a private elevator is key to maintaining a high level of accessibility in the home itself. It offers a greater agility and independence to the person wanting to move between plants and within the home.
Along with the accessibility that people gain, once the elevator is installed, comfort is found, since having a lifting method means that weights can also be moved comfortably from one floor to another, without having to carry them with the stairs, avoiding the dangers that entails.
Currently you extend a wide variety of options for the domestic elevator. This makes this device can decisively contribute to improve the aesthetics of the home.
What settings are there to customize the lift?
There are numerous configuration options regarding the customization of the cabin. You can use wood or glass finishes, including stainless steel. The type of floor, ceiling and lighting are also configured. Finally we can also choose to use low consumption lights or LEDs, for greater savings.
Likewise, several possibilities are offered in the equipment of domestic elevator doors. The most basic configuration is that of manual doors in the landings of each plant and a photoelectric barrier in the cabin. The most complete, on the contrary, would be the automatic doors in landings as in the cabin itself.
If it is equipped with automatic doors in the cabin, the operation will be the same as in conventional lifts: you press the floor you want to go to and the elevator stops automatically when you reach the selected floor. If the elevator did not have a door in the cabin, but carried a photoelectric barrier, the operation would be by means of the sustained pulsation.
What regulations apply if an elevator is installed in a house?
According to the regulations applicable to lifts in Spain, in the domestic environment we must apply the following rules:
- Royal Decree 88/2013 New complementary technical instruction (ITC) AEM 1 "elevators" of the regulation of lifting and maintenance equipment, approved by RD 2291/1985. The conservative companies must make visits for the preventive maintenance of the elevators, defining deadlines and application.
- European standard EN 81-20 and EN 81-50. They replace the standards EN 81-1 and EN 81-2. They came into force on 1/09/2017 and are mandatory for new lifts (without retroactive character). They are applicable for both electric and hydraulic lifts. EN 81-20 covers the safety rules for the construction and installation of elevators, EN 81-50 defines the procedures, designs, calculations, inspections and tests of elevator components.
Opt for the quality of life
In conclusion, an elevator at home supposes an increase in the quality of life and, in addition, increases the value of a house if it is wanted to put on sale. It is a long-term bet, since the elevator helps with the ups and downs of loads. Also, it will facilitate the climb of stairs when you have an age.
